TI-Nspire™ – Unit System – Units and Physical Constants

  • Units are marked with an underscore separated from other characters, for example _m, _cm, _mm, _eV.
  • Most units follow typical notation, but due to naming conflicts, some differ from standard symbols. For example, _g represents gravitational acceleration, while _gm means gram.
  • TI-Nspire automatically retrieves the values of constants in calculations, such as _g, _h, and _c.
  • TI-Nspire converts input values to base units automatically and performs calculations using them.
    • The result will be correct even if the expression contains mixed units.
    • If the final result is desired in a different unit, append a conversion operator (arrow-template or @>) and the target unit.

You can also use the guided unit conversion assistant!

* Temperature units °C and °F are an exception, as the system cannot detect whether the value represents a temperature or a temperature difference. Therefore, they are not converted automatically.

Examples

Basic unit conversions

Use unit symbols such as _cm or _J for calculations. The triangle symbol (▶) for conversions can be typed using @> on the keyboard.

Physical constants in calculations

Use predefined physical constants like _g, _c and _u directly in your calculations. You can convert between units using the triangle symbol (▶), typed with @>.

Unit conversions & Ideal Gas Law

Use unit conversions in combination with physical formulas. Constants like _Vm and _Rc can be inserted from the Unit Conversions menu.

Unit conversions & Velocity selector

In Notes, you can perform unit-aware physics calculations using symbols like _T and _kV.
